A Romantic Autumn Wedding at De Vere Horsley Estate in Surrey | Astrid & Paul
Bruiloften / 04 november 2026
An elegant English countryside wedding filled with genuine emotions, cinematic portraits and unforgettable autumn light.
An emotional wedding ceremony, beautiful autumn light and an unforgettable celebration at one of Surrey's most charming wedding venues. Some weddings stay with you long after the final dance. Not because of how grand they are, but because of the people, the emotions and the little moments that make the day truly unforgettable.
On 16 October 2026, Astrid and Paul celebrated their wedding at De Vere Horsley Estate in East Horsley, Surrey, England. Surrounded by their closest family and friends, they created a day filled with heartfelt moments, beautiful traditions, laughter and an incredible amount of love.
As a destination wedding photographer based in the Netherlands, travelling to England to document their celebration was a wonderful opportunity. And with the breathtaking autumn colours, historic architecture and magical English light, Horsley Estate provided an extraordinary setting for their wedding photography. A Warm Welcome at Horsley Estate
Our journey began in the Netherlands, driving towards Calais before boarding the train through the Channel Tunnel and continuing towards Surrey. Arriving at De Vere Horsley Estate felt like stepping into a little piece of English history. With its impressive architecture, beautiful grounds and romantic atmosphere, the estate was the perfect place for a wedding weekend.
The celebrations started the evening before the wedding with a relaxed gathering of close family and friends. Pizza, drinks and a few games of snooker brought everyone together, including relatives who hadn't seen each other for quite some time. It was the perfect way to begin the celebrations: informal, intimate and filled with laughter.
Wedding Morning: Anticipation, Family and Beautiful Details
The wedding morning began with a particularly sweet moment. After spending the night together at the estate, Astrid and Paul shared a goodbye kiss on the staircase before going their separate ways to prepare for the ceremony. Paul took their little son, Theo, to another part of the estate, where he would get ready with his father and friends. Meanwhile, Astrid enjoyed breakfast surrounded by family, her nieces and some of the people closest to her.
While I started photographing the wedding details and preparations with Astrid, my second photographer, Sandra, followed Paul and captured the atmosphere on the groom's side. As is often the case on wedding mornings, there were still a few last-minute things to organise. Paul made sure everything was running smoothly before finally finding a moment to get himself ready.
Meanwhile, the excitement was slowly building in the bridal suite. With her closest friends, maid of honour and nieces around her, Astrid could enjoy the preparations despite the understandable nerves. Her hair and makeup artists created a beautiful, timeless bridal look, and soon it was time to put on the wedding dress.

The Emotional Moments That Make Wedding Photography So Special
One of the things I love most about wedding photography is how meaningful the smallest moments can become. During Astrid's preparations, her family played an especially important role. One of her brothers carefully placed a treasured family heirloom necklace around her neck. It was a quiet, emotional moment, connecting generations and bringing family memories into the wedding day. Her nieces helped with her bracelet, while her best friend handed her the earrings. Each little gesture was filled with love and care. Finally, the veil was placed, completing her bridal look. And suddenly, the moment everyone had been waiting for was approaching.
A Heartfelt Wedding Ceremony at De Vere Horsley Estate
As the ceremony room filled with guests, anticipation grew. The bridesmaids made their entrance down the staircase, followed by Astrid, who was met by her brother, ready to accompany her down the aisle. Paul was waiting at the front. And the moment he saw Astrid, his emotions took over. There are moments during a wedding when words simply aren't necessary. The expression on Paul's face, the tears in his eyes and the way he looked at his bride said everything. It was one of those beautiful, completely genuine moments that I feel privileged to capture as a wedding photographer. The ceremony continued with personal vows, witnessed by their closest family and friends. Both Astrid and Paul had written heartfelt promises to one another, bringing smiles, tears and plenty of emotion. Their little son Theo, accompanied by his grandfather, had the important responsibility of bringing the wedding rings. After exchanging rings and sharing their first kiss as a married couple, the ceremony continued with meaningful words from a family member and the signing of the register. One particularly touching detail was the inclusion of a wedding photograph of deceased parents of the bride. A beautiful way to honour loved ones who could not be there in person, but whose presence was still deeply felt throughout the day. It was a ceremony filled with everything that makes weddings so special: family, connection, memories and love.

Confetti, Celebrations and the Beauty of an English Autumn
After the ceremony, Astrid and Paul made their joyful exit before heading outside for a wonderful confetti moment. The celebrations initially continued indoors, but the beautiful October weather soon encouraged everyone to move outside. Guests enjoyed drinks, conversations and congratulations while the autumn atmosphere gave the estate a particularly romantic feeling. October weddings in England can be wonderfully unpredictable when it comes to the weather. But sometimes that unpredictability creates the most incredible photographic opportunities. And this was definitely one of those days.

Romantic Autumn Wedding Photography at Horsley Estate
Before heading out for their couple portraits, Astrid and Paul had planned something I always appreciate: a little time just for themselves. They returned to the chapel for something to eat and drink, taking a quiet moment together away from the celebrations. Afterwards, we spent around thirty minutes exploring the estate for their wedding portraits. The light was becoming more beautiful by the minute. Dramatic clouds moved across the English sky, allowing beams of sunlight to break through and illuminate the historic architecture and autumn trees. We used the beautiful backlight to create romantic portraits with the castle-like building in the background, while sunlight filtered through the leaves. There were elegant silhouettes, intimate moments and dramatic compositions that perfectly complemented the atmosphere of the location. In the courtyard, the combination of blue skies, red autumn leaves and strong directional sunlight created another wonderful opportunity for more editorial wedding portraits. For me, this is where documentary wedding photography and a more creative, editorial approach come together. Natural moments, beautifully composed, without losing the authenticity of the couple.

Chasing the Golden Hour in Surrey
After some family photographs and a visit to the children's playroom, everyone gathered for an early wedding dinner. But during the first course, something caught my attention. The light outside was becoming absolutely magical. As a photographer, you learn to recognise those rare moments when everything comes together: the weather, the landscape, the colours and the position of the sun. I approached Astrid and Paul and suggested stepping outside for a few more photographs. They hesitated for a moment, understandably. After all, they were in the middle of their wedding dinner. But I think they could see from my enthusiasm that this was an opportunity worth taking. And what an opportunity it was.
The warm golden-hour light transformed the surroundings into something extraordinary. It was the kind of light photographers dream about, especially during an autumn wedding in England. Those few additional minutes outside resulted in some of my favourite photographs of the entire day. Sometimes the most memorable wedding portraits happen when you allow a little room for spontaneity.

Wedding Speeches Filled with Laughter and Tears
After dinner and dessert, it was time for the speeches. One of Astrid's brothers delivered a wonderful speech, balancing hilarious memories with emotional words that brought tears to many eyes. Paul's sister also shared a heartfelt speech, followed by a beautiful toast. Finally, Astrid and Paul thanked their guests with a speech of their own, ending with a lovely kiss in front of everyone. The evening celebrations continued with a special champagne sabrage moment. The day's host ceremoniously opened a bottle of champagne with a sabre before the couple and their closest family gathered outside for another celebratory toast. Another wonderful memory from a day already filled with them.

Wedding Cake, First Dance and an Unforgettable Party
Back inside, the wedding cake was waiting. Although, judging by the looks on the children's faces, they had been waiting for it for quite some time too! After the cake-cutting moment, it was time for Astrid and Paul's first dance. And from that moment onwards, the party truly began. The dance floor filled almost immediately with guests dancing, laughing and celebrating together. It may have been an intimate wedding, but the energy was incredible. Everyone joined in, and the dance floor remained busy throughout the evening. As the final song played, Astrid and Paul shared one last beautiful embrace on the dance floor. After all the anticipation, the emotions, the celebrations and the unforgettable moments, it was a wonderfully intimate way to end their wedding day. Just the two of them, holding each other close, taking in the final moments of a day they would never forget.
