A Dreamy Drummond Castle Gardens Pre-Wedding Shoot in Scotland | Emma & Hamish

Some wedding days simply don’t allow much time for portraits. Rather than rushing through one of the most memorable parts of their wedding photography, Emma and Hamish decided to do something different. The day before their wedding, we met for a relaxed Drummond Castle Gardens pre-wedding shoot in the heart of Scotland. It turned out to be one of the highlights of the entire wedding weekend. Check out the highlight slideshow:

Why Emma & Hamish Chose a Pre-Wedding Session

Emma and Hamish both grew up in Scotland, and Drummond Castle Gardens has always been a place they wanted to go visit. It wasn’t just another beautiful location,it was filled with memories. Because their wedding day schedule was packed, they knew they wouldn’t have much time for extensive portraits. Instead of squeezing everything into a tight timeline, they chose to spread the photography across the weekend.

The plan was simple:

A relaxed pre-wedding session at Drummond Castle Gardens.
A few portraits on the wedding day itself.
A short after-wedding session to complete their story.

This approach gave them the best of both worlds: more time to enjoy their wedding with family and friends, while still creating breathtaking portraits without feeling rushed.

Perfect Summer Weather in Scotland

Scotland is famous for its unpredictable weather, but this time it surprised us all. Instead of wind and rain, we were greeted with warm sunshine and beautiful blue skies and perfect clouds formations. It felt like the perfect summer day, something even Emma and Hamish joked wasn’t very Scottish!

Before we even entered the gardens, a lovely moment happened. While buying our tickets, one of the staff members recognised Emma and Hamish and immediately started chatting with them about their upcoming wedding. You could feel the excitement building for the weekend ahead, and it set the tone for the entire session.

Why Drummond Castle Gardens Is Such an Incredible Location

If you’re looking for an unforgettable location for a Scotland engagement session, it’s difficult to imagine somewhere more impressive than Drummond Castle Gardens. The perfectly maintained gardens, dramatic symmetry, ancient stone walls and surrounding landscape create a setting that feels almost cinematic. It’s no surprise the gardens have been featured in films and television productions over the years. Every pathway offered another stunning backdrop, making it easy to create a collection of timeless, elegant portraits while simply enjoying a walk together.

A Surprise Dress That Changed Everything

Emma and Hamish arrived wearing outfits they had carefully chosen for the session. But we had one more surprise. Along with their own clothing, we brought a flowing Red Dress for Emma to wear during the second half of the shoot. The deep red colour contrasted beautifully with the vibrant green gardens and historic surroundings, creating images that felt almost regal.

After a quick outfit change, the atmosphere shifted completely. The elegant dress transformed the session into something even more editorial, giving us a wonderful mix of natural lifestyle portraits and dramatic fine art-inspired photographs. It’s one of my favourite ways to add variety to a pre-wedding session and create images that couples never expected.

My Experience Photographing at Drummond Castle Gardens

As a destination wedding photographer in Scotland, photographing at Drummond Castle Gardens was an absolute pleasure. The gardens are beautifully maintained, every corner offers something unique, and the location has an incredible sense of history and elegance. But what truly made this session special wasn’t just the venue, it was Emma and Hamish themselves. They were relaxed, excited for their wedding weekend, and genuinely enjoyed every moment together. That excitement shines through in the photographs and creates images that feel authentic years later.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Engagement Session

One piece of advice I always give couples is this:

Choose a location that means something to you. It doesn’t have to be the most famous place in Scotland. Sometimes it’s somewhere you’ve visited together, somewhere you grew up, or simply a place whose atmosphere matches your personalities. For some couples, that’s the rugged Scottish Highlands. For others, it’s elegant gardens like Drummond Castle. Maybe it’s a historic church, a quiet beach, or somewhere completely unexpected.

The best photographs happen when you’re somewhere you genuinely love. And if you’re open to it, I always enjoy adding an extra surprise, whether that’s a second location or a unique outfit, to make your session even more memorable.

Planning Your Scotland Engagement Session

Whether you’re planning a destination wedding in Scotland or you’re a local couple looking for timeless engagement photography, a pre-wedding session is a wonderful way to slow down and create something truly personal.

Emma and Hamish’s session at Drummond Castle Gardens perfectly shows that your wedding photography doesn’t have to fit into a single day. Sometimes giving yourselves a little extra time results in the most meaningful photographs of all.

If you’re looking for a destination wedding photographer in Scotland, or you’re dreaming of a Drummond Castle Gardens pre-wedding shoot or a beautiful Scotland engagement session, I’d love to help you create photographs that feel natural, elegant and timeless.
